OPTO 22 Helps James Cameron Make HistoryWhat's at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest place in the ocean? Recently, an Opto 22 PAC controller! On March 26th, when filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence James Cameron made his historical solo dive nearly 7 miles (11 km) deep, Opto 22's SNAP PAC System sat at the heart of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER, the technologically advanced submersible he piloted. As reported on the National Geographic DEEPSEA CHALLENGE website, Opto 22's own Ben Orchard provided on-site technical support for the sub, helping with programming, electrical engineering, and "almost every aspect of the electronics and computer systems." We're proud to be an integral part of this expedition—the first solo dive to this depth and the first return to Challenger Deep in over 50 years. The observations and samples brought to light will fuel scientific and practical advances in biology and geology, from learning how life survives at extreme pressures to finding out more about earthquakes and their resulting tsunamis. We're glad we could help. More details to come. Stay tuned! See More About DEEPSEA CHALLENGE.
